FAQs About Acpuncture

FAQs About Acupuncture San DiegoConventional, Western medicine is brilliant in a lot of areas. People have been able to live normal lives after horrible car crashes and other near fatal accidents. And that’s because Western medicine is great at keeping people alive. But what it isn’t great at is keeping people pain-free. In fact, Western medicine defines chronic pain as pain that can be controlled or managed but not cured.

I think that’s rubbish. The human body is designed to heal itself. If it weren’t, our species would have died off long ago. For example, you get a cut. Maybe you put a band-aid on it but then you don’t think about it again. And a week later, where’s the cut? It’s gone! Because the body healed itself. The inside of the body is no different.

What will my first acupuncture appointment be like?

During your first appointment I will take a thorough medical history, review any previous lab work, and then do a physical exam. Next we will talk about your treatment plan, and then I will give you an acupuncture treatment. The needles are retained for about 20-30 minutes. This all takes about an hour and a half.

What should I wear to my acupuncture treatment?

Loose fitting comfortable clothes are easiest but I understand you may be coming from work. Some clients bring yoga pants or shorts to change into or I will provide a gown for you. Not all treatments though involve those hard to reach points.

The big question- do the acupuncture needles hurt?

Some of our needles are so thin, they are the diameter of a human hair. Most of the needles I use are slightly bigger than that but that gives you an idea that acupuncture needles are nothing like hypodermic needles. Some people report a heavy, sometimes warm or tingly feeling at the insertion site. Others feel nothing at all. And then there are a few that do say the needles hurt. If this is you, don’t worry. I will find needles that make the experience as pleasant as possible for you.

What will I feel like after the acupuncture treatment?

This is different for everyone and the strength and purpose of a treatment can be different. Some people feel energized while some feel calm and more clear-headed while others feel like they have just had a refreshing nap.

What conditions does acupuncture treat?

Do you have chronic pain? Muscular tightness? Trouble sleeping? Digestive issues? Anxiety? Trouble conceiving? Headaches? Stress?

Acupuncture successfully treats all of these very common ailments and so many more because acupuncture affects all the major systems of the body. What I usually tell people when they ask me this is, unless you just right now broke a bone, acupuncture can help you.
