Pivotal Acupuncture + Wellness in San Diego
My name is Alina Sepeda and I am a licensed acupuncturist in San Diego with a Masters of Science degree in Oriental Medicine. I have always been interested in health and fitness in some way or another and trying to recruit people to explore those areas of life with me.
I have gone through many phases in my journey towards finding what exactly is optimum health for me. When I was twelve years old, I noticed that fast food didn’t make me feel very good, so I stopped eating it and haven’t eaten it since. At the same time, I decided I would try a diet with no pork or red meat. That lasted for 18 years. Then I switched to a macrobiotic diet for awhile and then tried all kinds of elimination diets. I was on the search to find what food feels best for me. And I have learned that that answer is a little different for everyone.
My journey through fitness has been similar- I have always been a long distance runner at heart but I have gone through phases of cycling, swimming, weightlifting, capoeira, dance, rock climbing, yoga, pilates, feldenkreis, tai chi, qi gong- you name it! And the answer about fitness is the same too- what makes sense for each person is a little different for everyone.
My journey to find Chinese Medicine was also similar. I always knew I really enjoyed helping people and even more so, helping them to feel good about themselves and about life. I taught preschool for autistic children. I taught English to indigenous children in the Amazon. I was a wilderness counselor teaching emotionally troubled teens how to cope with life. I was an active travel guide helping people to get away from the stresses of life and enjoy themselves in nature.
But, it was while working in Costa Rica that I had my calling to become a medical practitioner. I returned home and started looking into western medical schools. I quickly realized that conventional, western medicine, while very effective for immediate trauma and surgeries, had become on an everyday level governed by pharmaceutical companies. I was disheartened as I began to research and learn the number of people in this country taking pharmaceutical drugs to not eradicate their diseases, but simply to make them more tolerable. This wasn’t medicine to me.
I started researching other medical systems and found the extensive lineage of Chinese medicine to be irrefutable. The stuff works! I knew then that Chinese medicine was something that needed to be brought to more people. So, I studied and graduated from the Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley, California. I also spent several years studying under a Chinese medicine master to further understand this powerful medicine.
Since finishing school though, I have continued to study and have learned that the term integrative medicine is simply an umbrella term for several medical systems. Why limit our health to being dictated by the tenets of only one medical system?
Functional medicine is a medical system that has evolved in the last 30 years. It emphasizes the biological uniqueness of each person meaning treatments are highly individualized. It is integrative combining the best that traditional medicine has to offer with the best that alternative medicine has to offer. The patient is also empowered and highly encouraged to take an active role in their health.
What could be better- the two of us working together to get you feeling, moving, and eating better. I look forward to working alongside you on your journey to better health.
